Finding Peace

The world always looks forward to times of peace and prosperity; everybody wants it.

Candidates for office talk of peace, philosophers write of peace…

…and yet peace in the world is elusive.

The Bible also talks of peace, but here it seems to mean something quite different, for peace in the Bible doesn’t mean the absence of human conflict.  Truly, the Bible actually speaks of peace in the presence of human conflict.

Biblical peace takes place when we stop fighting God.  Biblical peace is when our rebellion against God comes to an end, and that comes when we accept the terms God has offered to humanity through the atoning work of Jesus Christ.  By His sacrifice, the penalty for our sin is removed, and as we follow Him and move our lives into line with God’s ways we find peace because we are no longer at war within ourselves.

Remarkably, this is true even in the midst of human conflict.  We need not carry fear with us, not of harm, not of injury and not even of death, for we know that God is with us and that we are with God.

If physical death cannot kill us, then what is it that this world can do to us that compares with the glory of Heaven?
