When the Fog Rolls In

If you’ve ever lived or driven through farm country in the late autumn, you know what a heavy morning fog looks like. It settles over the fields so thickly that you can barely see twenty feet ahead of your bumper. The trees blur, the familiar landmarks vanish, and if you aren’t careful, it’s easy to feel disoriented and tense, gripping the steering wheel a little too tight just trying to stay on the road.

Life has a way of rolling in its own kind of fog, doesn’t it? One day everything is clear, and the next, unexpected health news, financial stress, or family heartache settles in. The future suddenly looks completely gray, and we find ourselves squinting through the dark, wondering where the path went.

When the fog of life rolls in, we don’t have to panic. The Psalmist knew what it was like to walk through blinding shadows and still find his footing:

“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

Psalm 23:4

Notice that the text doesn’t say you will never enter a valley. It doesn’t promise that life will always be smooth highways and bright sunshine. What it promises is presence.

When everything around you is hazy and uncertain, God doesn’t stand a mile ahead shouting directions you can’t hear; He walks right beside you in the mist. You might not be able to see five steps down the road, but you can trust the hand of the One holding yours.

What fog are you squinting through today, and can you sense the steady, comforting presence of the Good Shepherd walking right beside you in it?
