Have you ever had one of those mornings where you sat down to use a lamp or an appliance, flipped the switch, and nothing happened?
You check the bulb, fiddle with the dials, maybe even give it a gentle tap—only to look down and realize the cord came unplugged from the wall. The lamp wasn’t broken; it was just cut off from its source of power.
In our spiritual lives, we often do the exact same thing. We resolve to be more patient, more loving, more disciplined, and less anxious. We try harder, grit our teeth, and run ourselves ragged trying to produce “good fruit” through sheer willpower. And before long, we’re exhausted, discouraged, and right back where we started.
Jesus put it simply:
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”
John 15:5
A branch doesn’t sweat, strain, or worry about producing grapes. Its only job is to stay connected to the vine. The life, the nourishment, and the fruit all come directly from the sap flowing through it.
Spiritual growth is relational, not transactional. It doesn’t come from checking off a checklist of rules to prove our worth. It comes from spending quiet time in His presence—talking with Him, resting in His Word, and letting His Spirit do what we could never do on our own.
When we stay plugged into Christ, the fruit takes care of itself.
Am I trying to produce fruit on my own strength today, or am I taking time to simply abide in the Vine?
