Majesty

When you were a kid, did you ever lay out on the grass at look up at the sky?  I bet you did.  You can see the clouds moving across the sky and changing, billowing, maybe looking like faces, pirate ships or animals…

Now that you are a grown up adult do you ever just lay back and look up at the sky with the same wonder and curiosity that you did when you were a child?

No, I didn’t think so…

There are many aspects of childhood that are filled with little wonders like that, looking up at the sky I mean.

Here’s a question for you: Is there really anything that we can see in this life that is more majestic that the sky above us?  I’m not sure that there is!  The truth for most of us is that we almost never look up as adults; we’re too busy.  Just for the heck of it, I tried it recently, but I can’t see very well any more; there were no faces or pirate ships up there; I didn’t much like it at first.  Being stubborn by nature, I kept looking and I realized that the clouds were slowly moving from west to east; I actually could tell that much.  To me, what I can see of the clouds looks rather more solid than I remembered.  The blue was an amazingly deep hue; I hadn’t remembered it being that dark in mid-day before, but then I really hadn’t bothered to notice in such a long time.  I started to feel that sense of wonder that a child feels when seeing something for the first time… and I started to be thankful for the sight I have left.

OK, don’t tell anybody that I said all this, they’ll come after my “man card”.

Why is it that we have to be so “grown up” and busy all the time that we lose that little bit of childish wonder?   Why can’t we just relax and take in all of the majestic wonders that God has placed all around us and thank Him for His handiwork?

Oh, right: somebody will want to revoke the “man card” …right; what was I thinking… back to rushing around and being busy I go!

You know – I always remember the days my friend and I use to lay in the grass and look at the clouds for different shapes and using our imagination, we would conjure up stories about those shapes. Wow – did I live in another world. Today – how many 4th graders would do that. Thanks for a great post.

It’s kind of sad isn’t it? Today’s 4th graders are not so likely to have put their video game s down long enough to look up… Thanks for the nice comment!

I remember climbing up on an old barn roof and lying down on the hot rough shingles…. just staring at the sky wondering if God knew I was there. Life was so much simpler back then. Now I imagine God looking down at me and wondering if I know He’s there.
