Words are funny things. They are completely invisible, they weigh absolutely nothing, and yet they possess enough power to either build a person up or tear them down completely. Most of us can probably still remember a careless, cutting remark someone threw our way years ago, just as clearly as we remember a warm word of encouragement that kept us going through a dark week. A tongue may be small, but it steers the whole ship. The Proverbs capture this everyday reality with striking clarity:
“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”
Proverbs 18:21
Think about the fruit growing in our daily conversations. Are our words bringing life, encouragement, and calm to our families and workplaces, or are they sprouting complaints, gossip, and sharp criticism? Walking in wisdom means learning to pause before we speak. It means asking a simple, quiet question before the words leave our lips: Will this build someone up, or will it just add to the noise? When Christ’s love is working in our hearts, our speech naturally shifts from tearing down to healing up; from words that are coarse, to words that bring life and love.
Is there someone in your life today who needs to hear a word of encouragement and grace from you instead of a critique?
