The First Rule of Understanding

I’ve paid enough attention to the news cycle over the years to notice a common thread: it is getting harder and harder to find folks who simply tell the unvarnished truth. Between political spin, polished advertisements, half-truths, and sensationalized headlines, you practically need a full-time detective just to sort fact from fiction.

If you take everything you see on a screen or read online at face value, you’ll end up cynical, angry, and worn out before breakfast. A long time ago, I realized what Scripture and history teach us time and again: very little in this fallen world is quite what it appears to be on the surface.

David, a man who spent plenty of years dealing with deceitful advisers and treacherous enemies, knew exactly where to fix his eyes:

“As for God, his way is perfect: The Lord’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him. For who is God besides the Lord? And who is the Rock except our God?”

Psalm 18:30-31

Notice David’s verdict: human words are often flawed, self-serving, and fragile. But the Word of the Lord is flawless.

When confusion swirls and conflicting voices demand your loyalty, you don’t have to get tangled up in the noise. You don’t have to solve every controversy or figure out every hidden motive. God’s Word remains true, His promises never expire, and His character has never failed a single test. We can place our trust in Him—all else is questionable.

Have the loud, conflicting voices of the world been crowding out the quiet, flawless truth of God’s Word in your heart lately?
