We live in a world that is practically addicted to rushing. “Hurry up! Time is running out! Move it! Rush, rush, rush!” Between chime notifications, full email inboxes, appointments, and endless chores, modern life has a way of turning into a relentless whirlwind.
I’ve often noted that we have all kinds of wonderful time-saving devices today, yet we seem to have less free time than any generation before us. If we aren’t careful, the frantic busyness of daily life crowds out the very things that give life meaning: our families, our loved ones, and our relationship with the Lord.
David faced incredible pressures, responsibilities, and busy demands, yet he made a conscious choice about his priorities:
“Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.”
Psalm 25:4-5
Notice that an instructive, growing relationship requires attention. You can’t learn someone’s paths or hear their wisdom if you never slow down enough to listen.
Relationships don’t grow on autopilot or benign neglect. If you only spoke to your spouse or your closest friend for thirty seconds once a week while dashing out the door, that friendship would wither pretty fast. The same is true in our walk with Christ.
We have to be intentional. It might mean using the “off button” on your phone for fifteen minutes. It might mean sitting on the porch with your morning coffee and a Bible before the house stirs. It might mean taking a five-minute “lunch break with Jesus” in your car.
When you invest time in your relationship with Him, the sanity returns, your priorities clear up, and the noise of the world finally takes a back seat.
What is one distraction you can turn off today so you can spend a few unhurried minutes with the Lord?
