Have you ever had to attend an event or a meeting where you felt you had to be on your absolute best behavior? You wear your stiffest clothes, watch every single word that comes out of your mouth, and sit up straight so nobody thinks you don’t belong there. It’s exhausting, and when it’s finally over, you let out a massive sigh of relief.

A lot of folks approach prayer that very same way. They treat prayer like a formal audience with a distant dignitary. They think they have to speak in King James English, repeat the right formulas, and clean up their lives before they dare clear their throat and say hello to the Almighty.

Yet Scripture tells us we don’t need an engraved invitation or a script to come before God:

“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

Hebrews 4:16

Notice it’s called a throne of grace, not a throne of judgment or formal review. Because of what Jesus accomplished on the cross, the door is wide open.

Prayer isn’t an awkward business meeting where you try to impress God with your spiritual vocabulary. It’s simply a child talking with a loving Father. You can come to Him tired, confused, messy, or rejoicing. He already knows your heart anyway—He just wants to spend time with you.
