Over the last… however many months… I’ve had the sense that the world really seems to be getting more and more crazy. It isn’t just crazy in this country; craziness seems to be everywhere to one degree or another these days in many areas of life. As I was thinking about this, along with what to write about next, it occurred to me that it would be rather timely to re-run my series on the book of Ecclesiastes.
Why- what does this have to do with Ecclesiastes?
In Ecclesiastes Solomon tells of his great search for wisdom. He does so by writing from two completely different points of view; one is from the natural human point of view, and the other is from the point of view of God and His people. In our times when we look at things from that natural human viewpoint, the world around us appears to have gone entirely mad. Yet when we look at the same things from a more heavenly point of view we quickly realize that this is really the normal state of affairs without God. It seems to me that in these crazy times, this might be a good reminder for all of us to see things for what they truly are, and place our complete trust and hope in our Lord. Thus I am re-running these posts which first appeared here more than 2 1/2 years ago, beginning today.

The Book of Ecclesiastes is both one of my favorites and one I have found difficult to understand. What do I mean? Well, if we read a book of prophecy like Daniel or Isaiah, that book can be very difficult to understand, but we at least have some realization we are baffled. Ecclesiastes, on the other hand, can leave us think we understand the book when we actually don’t.
What we read Ecclesiastes, it is especially important to know what King Solomon was trying to accomplish. Hence, I like the way Don Merritt begins his series of posts on the book.
