Looking for Harmony

“Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble.”

(1Peter 3:8)

It’s a great burden to carry if you are someone who is always right; it’s an even greater burden to know it all.

Do you know anybody like that? No matter how wrong they might be, they are right.  Even when they aren’t sure about something, they have an opinion, and you’d better agree. I don’t know about you, but folks like that kind of wear me out; I get tired just listening to their wisdom.

Harmony, compassion, sympathy, humility; these may not always be attributes that come naturally, but they are attributes that are empowering.  These are things that will set you free from the burden of needing to know everything and always being right; all of the arguments are over.

So tell me, why is it really so important that everyone else see everything the way you do? The only answer I can conceive of is that the person who is always right needs approval…

The older I get, the more I realize that the approval of others isn’t all that important.  What really matters is how I behave toward others.  Am I someone who is pleasant to be around, can I make a contribution to others?  If the answer to these questions is ‘yes’ then those other things become irrelevant.  None of us really needs another debate, we need harmony; everything else will take care of itself.
