A Family Legacy

SCAN0240

A friend sent this photo to me a while back and suggested that it might make a good blog post, and I agreed at the time.  Since then I have looked at it nearly every day hoping for some brilliant inspiration but none came my way. Apparently this friend’s wife is doing some genealogy research and came across the photo.  I have no idea who these ladies are or where exactly the picture was taken or any other details, but I gather that it must have been taken in the 1930’s or 40’s judging from the way they are dressed and the car in the background.

One thing I did notice it that they all appear to be smiling. Then it hit me…

These ladies lived in tough times and made it through.  They worked hard it would appear, they raised their turkeys, they loved their families and they maintained a relationship with their loved ones… and they are recalled by their descendants to this day, as evidenced by the fact that their descendants still have their photo.

Thus, it would appear to me that they created a legacy for their descendants who remember them still.  What exactly that legacy is, I do not know, but the legacy is there.

What legacy will we leave behind?  Will our descendants keep our photos for 80 years or more?  Will they remember us in the year 2100? If so what they remember us for?  Will it be for our godly lives, our daily demonstration of what it is to be a follower of Jesus Christ?  Will they be looking forward to being reunited with us in Heaven?

In short, will anybody miss us when we are gone?

If we are drawing a breath today, there is still time for us to leave a godly legacy to our families; will we get busy?

If I may correct you in the era of this photo? 😀 Its from the late 1920’s. The hair (called the “Bob” and drew the ire of many a mother when the long hair was “bobbed”) and shoes are exactly as my grandmother’s was in 1926 where I have a photo of her and her then fiance, my dad’s dad, standing in front of an auto just like the one in the picture, too. I am blessed with a few early 1900’s photos and the one I really like is one of my great uncle with workhorse and cart delivering groceries from a local grocer in a neighborhood of Victorian-style homes.

    What a wonderful photo! And a good think-about post…

Funny you should say that. I asked the person who sent me the photo the other day, after I had sceduled the post, and she thought that the picture must be around c. 1927-1903… so it looks like you are quite right! Thanks for the help!
