The Shelter of the Lord

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”

(Psalm 91:1-2)

There are many people who would claim that those of us who are followers of the Lord Jesus Christ are weak.  They might say that we aren’t strong enough on our own to stand, they might even say that we are fleeing from reality to hang onto a mythological hope to avoid the real world.  In fact, I can recall one person who came up with the whole idea of “bitter clingers” not too many years ago…

To these people the shelter of the Lord may look pretty weak, for the Lord considers weakness to be the ultimate strength.  The strength of men doesn’t last; it is ultimately frail and will fall and history is full of this lesson.

The shelter of the Lord may appear like an old building that has settling problems.  Maybe the roof sags a little bit, maybe the floors creek and the paint is chipping: it isn’t any good.  But then you consider that it has stood up to sun, wind and storms for over a hundred years… You investigate and realize that its construction quality is vastly superior to anything being built now and you come to realize that despite its appearance it is likely to be standing long after the new building has gone to dust.

The shelter of the Lord is powerful despite what people may think; it’s the power of God unto salvation.

I never thought about it that way, but I suppose there are people who think that the shelter of the LORD is only a construct of our own imagination and therefore, fallible human structure. However for me, the LORD G-d is the one place I can go that has NEVER failed me ever, not once. There have been times when my iife has literally hung by a thread and He sheltered my life. From large things to small, He has been, is, and will be my rock, my fortress, my shelter.
