Truth

OTA 001

Does the truth really count for anything anymore? Does anybody really care, or is the truth just whatever it seems like to me?

Does government tell us the truth about anything, say the economy for instance?  Do athletes tell the truth about steroids?  How about the news media, are they telling the truth about the stories they report?

Well, I can’t say, for there is clearly enough falsehood flying around out there that when people do tell the truth you really have to wonder…

So what is truth?

We aren’t the first people to ask this question; in fact it’s as old as the Scriptures.  It’s a question that Pilate asked Jesus two thousand years ago. (John 18:38) Jesus told Pilate that He “came into the world to testify to the truth.” He also taught us  that He is “The way, the truth and the life”  (John 14:6)

As Christians there is one thing that we can be certain of: Jesus is Truth; His words are true.  We need to keep this in mind as we see and hear the world around us proclaim “alternate” truths.  If these “truths” are in conflict with the teachings and person of Christ, they are falsehoods. As we listen to newscasts talk about things that are in conflict with what Jesus taught… we know what to conclude.

The truth is that very little in this world is what it appears to be! This is the lesson of Scripture and it is the lesson of history, and it is the first rule of understanding our world.  Jesus Christ is Truth, all else is questionable.

Thanks Don, excellent. I recall the Manic Street Preacher’s CD ‘This is my truth show me yours’ – they hail from the locality I live in. Is it OK to republish this on our church facebook page with appropriate acknowledgements? I’m sure it is, but best to check.

This is a beautiful piece, Don.

Like so many things… we, as humans, so often just REFUSE to believe what Jesus says. Just as I’ve come to the realization that “church” is not a “what” (an institution), or a “where” (a building or temple), but the Church is a “who” (the beautiful Bride of Christ)… so have I been dragged, kicking and screaming through the years, to the realization that Truth is also not a “what” (a set of “facts” that remain constant over time and space), but rather Truth is a Who… the Person of Christ Himself. He alone defines Truth (and that is a Person, not an affirmation), who we see through two relationships always… His relationship with Our Father (the Father’s very nature, expressed in perfect Union), and His relationship with those the Father fashioned as children (those He came to love, to save, and to enter into… the sinners, not the righteous).

Pilate was looking for the “What”? When already, right in front of him, was the Who!

Amen. I am struggling with teaching my children this now. It saddens me how much they get bombarded with that is just Satan’s lies. Daily, we are weeding through those lies and shining the light of Truth on them. Such a battle….but, I know who holds the victory! Thank you, Don!! Great post, as always!

    Don,
This has been on my mind lately as well, so it was great to read another’s perspective on truth. It seems we live in a culture where 2+2 no longer is = to 4! Truth seems to be irrelevant and obsolete. Help us all to know the Truth and to seek Truth!

I agree with you Brandon, we seem to love to muddy up the waters about most everything these days… and for what purpose? Seems like the purpose is to hide the truth more often than not, perhaps to avoid responsibility and accountability.

How truly wonderful to know that there is a rock of truth upon whom we can base our lives! The wonderful thing about God is that he has given us a freewill to choose good. Unfortunately, that means that some choose the other. Very sad, but we can pray that more will see the light and the real truth. There certainly is a lot of the opposite out there that could make people want something better.

Amen! How I wish everyone understood the Truth that is Jesus Christ, the Truth that is God’s word. I am so saddened when I hear the lies that are told and the comments that are made about the Bible and our Heavenly Father being just a myth or a legend, a made up story to control people. Thanks for a great post Don!

Amen! Pride makes people think that they are right… Humility makes us Righteous. I don’t have all the answers, I have access to The One who does.
