Have You Heard the News?

Arlington 9413 039

The central event in all of human history took place just outside of Jerusalem almost 2,000 years ago when a teacher from Nazareth was executed for crimes he didn’t commit. On that particular day, few people really noticed that there was anything unusual that had gone on, and if you weren’t in Jerusalem, you may never have heard a single thing about the events of that day.

If you had been in town on that day, you might have noticed that there had been a bit of a ruckus downtown and you might have heard that the leaders of the temple had been up in arms over something or another, but in all likelihood, you would’ve gone about your business as usual on a workday.  That evening, there might not have even been a mention of that execution, since the big news was probably about the earthquake at about mid-day.  Rumor was that it had done some kind of damage in the temple.

In spite of the fact that the events of that day seemed like no big deal to most people at the time, something incredible happened a couple of days later when that guy from Nazareth, you know the, the one who had been wrongly executed a couple of days before… well, when he burst forth from the tomb and rose from the grave they had put him in, now that was news!

But it was news that only a few people heard about until some time later…

When you stop and think about it, God has a funny way of working.  The greatest events aren’t usually covered in the press.  The greatest people don’t seem all that special when they are doing His work, and even the Son of God Himself can be at work in the midst of the people, and few realize who He is until He’s gone.  Maybe it takes some perspective to recognize God at work, maybe it takes better discernment than most people have, but if you ask me, I think it just requires that we slow down and take notice.   The reason that I think that is because we who are followers of Jesus Christ are supposed to be doing His work on this earth the way He did it when He was with us.  He didn’t normally attract a lot of attention to Himself, for He was putting others first.

As we go through our days putting others ahead of ourselves, making disciples and giving God all of the glory, who will take notice of us?  Only the ones who have been blessed by our work, and only the ones who actually slow down and take notice…
