Why?

IMG_0715

Have you ever seen somebody do something and all you can say is “why?”  Maybe you’ve been the one who did the thing: Why did you do it?

Well, I guess I should stand up and admit that I have done things that not only other people, but I myself asked that question!

I never ask that question about following Jesus Christ; I know why I follow Him and I understand why others do.  I voluntarily entered into a covenant with Him in which I agree to follow Him, and He provides forgiveness for my sins and eternal life with Him.  Actually, it’s a really good deal.

The question so often comes to mind when I hear an otherwise intelligent and perceptive person refuse to follow Him, even when confronted with facts that the person can’t argue with: Why? Oh, don’t worry, I can recite the theological reasons, I could probably write a book about them!  It is just difficult to fathom an intelligent person resorting to such lameness on such a crucial matter.  I hope that when I spoke to the person they just weren’t ready, and that they respond at a later date…

I suppose that the same question may pop up when you see a Christian behave in a way that is not consistent with being Christ’s disciple.  You know what I mean, don’t you?  When a Christian behaves badly and their bad behavior reflects poorly on the faith.  So very tragic, for one must ask how many are turned away from Christ because of a lapse; a mistake.

Well, without going on and on, maybe I can sum up these possibilities:  First, we need to be ready to share the good news of Jesus Christ to all who will listen.  Then, the response is their decision; we can only do our best.  Second, it is for each one of us to represent the Gospel well, in the way we live, the way we treat others and in the way we behave.  To do less on either count is surely something that will bring sadness to our Lord’s heart.

  1. We all have ‘Oh Crap’ moments. We all goof. It’s just nice to know: 1) We are not alone; and 2) God is there to forgive us. We just to need to have patience for those who we see misrepresenting Christians as a whole. God is still working in their lives to help them get back on track. Take Westboro Bapstist Church for an example. I read recently that two of the sisters left the camp, and all it took was a question to someone outside their church. It just takes longer for some than others.

  2. Wonderful exhortation. I am grieved when I see my brothers and sisters behave in a way inconsistent with their faith. I hate it when I’m the one with the bad behavior.

One of my favorite moments with Jesus was when I was apologizing for some stupid behavior or other. I was truly sorry, and had my apology all planned out. In the middle of it, He interrupted and asked, “Okay, so now what do you want to do?” Forgiveness is that simple with Him. Boy, am I ever thankful!

Thanks for stopping by Lessons by Heart and leading me here. I look forward to reading more from you.

Praising Jesus for His unfailing love.

PS the buffalo picture goes very well with the title. I looked at it and asked, “Why??” 😉
