I wonder why…

I wonder why God made the moon; what does it do? It seems like it just floats around up there and reflects light, sometimes more and sometimes less.  Does it really make any difference when you can hardly see it?  OK, I realize that it causes the whole ocean tide thing, but if the oceans just stayed in one place so to speak, would that be any big deal?

Maybe there’s quite a bit that I don’t really understand out there, but the moon; what’s to understand?  It’s just sort of extra isn’t it? If it doesn’t really do anything except reflect sunlight, then I don’t really think I believe in the moon!

Lots of people will agree with me, no doubt about that; lots of people don’t believe in church either.  “Organized religion” they call it; what’s the point?  I can worship God in nature, at home, at the seashore or downtown; what’s the point of church? No, they aren’t buying the whole church thing, and they probably will join me in not buying into the whole moon thing too.

You see, the moon and the church have a lot in common; both reflect light, both are a little mysterious and both affect things that you might not think of at first.  The church reflects the light of Truth in a dark world; the moon reflects sunlight in a dark night.  The church reflects God’s love in a hate-filled world and the moon’s reflected light has warmed the hearts of lovers since the beginning of time. The church affects the tides of society and culture through the Good News of salvation; the moon drives the tides of the sea.

Maybe I should re-think my position on the moon; maybe it has a purpose after all…

For anybody who wants to notice, the moon is a pretty good way to understand God and His purposes, because with God what you see is not always what you assume it is at first; there’s always so much more than meets the eye.

Taken from, It Was On Fire When I Laid Down On It. By Robert Fulghum

“When I was a small child, during the war, we were very poor and we lived in a remote village. One day, on the road, I found the broken pieces of a mirror. A German motorcycle had been wrecked in that place.

“I tried to find all the pieces and put them together, but it was not possible, so I kept only the largest piece. This one. And by scratching it on a stone I made it round. I began to play with it as a toy and became fascinated by the fact that I could reflect light into dark places where the sun would never shine–in deep holes and crevices and dark closets. It became a game for me to get light into the most inaccessible places I could find.

“I kept the little mirror, and as I went about my growing up, I would take it out in idle moments and continue the challenge of the game. As I became a man, I grew to understand that this was not just a child’s game but a metaphor for what I might do with my life. I came to understand that I am not the light or the source of the light. But light –truth, understanding, knowledge–is there, and it will only shine in many dark places if I reflect it.

“I am a fragment of a mirror whose whole design and shape I do not know. Nevertheless, with what I have I can reflect light into the dark places of this world–into the black places in the hearts of men–and change some things in some people. Perhaps others may see and do likewise. This is what I am about. This is the meaning of my life.”
