Coming Home

No matter how much we travel, it’s always good to be back home again.  Back home where we are in familiar territory, near friends and family…

For me, a home like the one above seems to symbolize this even more, it is inviting and warm.  It has a history and a heritage, being built in a simpler time before the world went mad…  Well, maybe that’s just my silly romanticized view, but you get the idea.

There is much more to this idea of coming home than just warm feelings and rose-colored glasses, for ultimately our home will probably not be quite like the one above, for it will be much more magnificent than anything ever made by Man.

How lovely is your dwelling place,
    O Lord Almighty!
My soul yearns, even faints,
    for the courts of the Lord;
my heart and my flesh cry out
    for the living God.

Even the sparrow has found a home,
    and the swallow a nest for herself,
    where she may have her young—
a place near your altar,
    O Lord Almighty, my King and my God.
Blessed are those who dwell in your house;
    they are ever praising you.

(Psalm 84:1-4)

Our ultimate  home is to dwell in God’s Heavenly home which will be more amazing than anyone could possibly describe, but we do have a foretaste in the present. When we dwell in His Church we are dwelling in His “home” in a sense.  We are surrounded by His servants and we are filled with His praise and glory.  We are in a community that is not only dedicated to His service, but one which is to be defined by brotherly love for one another.

A foretaste, yes, but not nearly the ultimate destination, for in this world we can never be quite at home… and yet we are in His presence all the same.  We have distractions to deal with and problems; lots of those in fact.  With some effort we can overcome distractions.  With effort and God’s helping hand we can overcome the problems, and with understanding we can live together in love.

Welcome home!

    That reminds me of a wonderful song sung by a friend of mine. It’s called “Going Home” sung by Bob Neary. I found in on the Rhapsody music site. Maybe it’s also on itunes. I don’t know. Bob went home a few years ago but the song says, “Going where I can see all the things I have to be, goin’ where God wants me to be, way back home in my Father’s land.” It’s really a beautiful song. Sometimes it makes me nostalgic for heavenly places. Then I snap back into reality, yes, there is work to be done, hearts to touch and hopefully lives to change before I go home to my Father’s land. Even so, it’s so comforting to know that it’s there waiting for us.
