Could we be stagnant?

If we are followers of Jesus Christ, we must be in motion, after all ‘follower’ implies that we are not standing still.  I doubt that anyone would claim that God is standing still, so how can we if we are “following”?

In order to continue following Him, we must also be growing in our walk with Jesus.  As a healthy and growing follower we are always moving and growing in our faith.

Faith can be like water.  A thriving and healthy faith is life-giving just as water is life-giving, but when water stands still for too long it can become stagnant and unhealthy, and the same can be true of our spiritual health. When we stop growing in our faith, when we stop following Jesus Christ, we tend to fall back into old patterns of life.  Self rears its head, sin creeps in and pretty soon our spiritual health is in sad shape. I’m not one for long and complicated dissertations so suffice it to say that  anybody in this situation needs to take some steps…

First, it is of vital importance for all of us to set aside time each day for prayer.

Second, we must ask ourselves if we are involved in a living and vibrant congregation of fellow believers.

Third, we all need to be a life-long student of God’s Word: so get back into the Bible.

Finally, it’s always a good idea to do some self assessment to ensure that our priorities are where they ought to be.  Are we aware of all that we need to be thankful for?  Do we put others ahead of ourselves?  Do we expect something in return for the things we do for others, or do we serve in expectation of praise?

These things will get anybody started back down the right path, even though I’m sure you could add to it.

One final thought: Those four questions… maybe we should take a look at them even if we think we are in great spiritual health, sort of a “check-up”.  Nobody wants to be stagnant!
