The Least or the Greatest?

Who is the greatest; what is greatness like?

Greatness is something that swirls around in the media all the time.  Sports announcers discuss the greatest team, the greatest quarterback or the greatest sprinter.  Political commentators discuss the greatest leader or the greatest hero or the greatest nation.  Others talk about the greatest singer, the greatest composer or the greatest actor…

Jesus talked about the greatest in the Kingdom (Luke 9:46-50) and what He called the greatest wouldn’t be in any of those other conversations, for He said that to be the greatest you had to be the least!

The least in this world would be someone who is living as Jesus would live: The servant of all.  In everything Jesus said and did, He was serving others.  His ultimate serve was to give His life for all of us, and in doing so He made it possible for us to live a life free from the guilt of our sin.  As His followers, we are supposed to live as He would… serving others in all we do without any concern for what we get in return.

Can you even imagine what life would be like on this earth if we actually did it?  What would family life be like if everyone served everyone else without worrying about getting credit or not doing more than someone else?  Can you imagine what your neighborhood would be like if your neighbors served each other selflessly… or your town, or the country you live in…?

I can only do what I can do.  I can’t make anybody else follow me, nor can I force my neighbors or family to do the same.  What if I just start serving others selflessly as Jesus would, at least as best I can, and not worry about what others decide to do?  What’s the worst that could happen… to be great in the Kingdom?
