What is more heart warming than seeing a young couple pledging their love to one another in marriage?
As they do so, they are embarking on a wonderful adventure together, one that will have all kinds of joys and triumphs along with a fair amount of tears and challenges. They will do their best to make a life together and a family. They will live and love and cry together; they will share themselves and become one strong unit. All is happiness when they tie the knot, and hopefully happiness will always outweigh the sorrows the life inevitably brings along…
A new married couple has a fair amount in common with someone who comes to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord. When they arise from the waters of Baptism with a new life, they put the old one aside, all is happiness and promise.
There will be challenges, disappointments and sorrows as they go through life , just like with the married couple. That’s how life is on this earth… But like the married couple, they need not travel through the journey of life alone, for they will have our Lord with them as they go. He can be their source of strength, their source of inspiration and their source of life itself… and His love is without limit. Unlike a human partner, our Lord never fails, never messes up and doesn’t disappoint.
There is one other similarity I can think of between the new couple and the new Christian. Their ultimate level of joy will have much to do with the choices they make as they continue down life’s path. When the couple goes through a rough patch, as they will sooner or later, their joy will be made complete if they turn to one another, not away from one another. For the new Christian, he or she will derive greater joy than ever if they turn to our Lord when things are rough rather than to turn away… In fact in both cases, facing everything in life as one with our Partner is absolutely the way to go.
